Before EXP 105 I would have defined
learning as being able to store and recall a lot of information. Because my
previous experience with education graded a student's ability to recall facts,
my idea of successful learning involved being a good test-taker. Learning about
intentional learning and the different Learning Patterns changed my definition.
Now my definition reflects the textbook definition that learning is a growing
expansion of knowledge incorporated into daily life. Some people may excel at
repeating and recalling facts, but it takes an intentional learner to find
purpose and application within the material.
I am a
Dynamic Learner: Sequence (27), Precision (24), technical Reasoning (23), and
Confluence (21). During EXP 105, I have used variations of my patterns to
complete assignments; however, I mostly use Precision and Sequence. To become a
more intentional reader, I tether Sequence and Confluence by skimming over the
information first and creating a chart of headings and subtitles to complete as
I read. After I read, I use Precision to summarize the information. It helps me
focus if I have an end goal in mind while reading. To complete assignments and
discussions, I intensify Precision by reading the instructions carefully. I
intensify Precision to create a list of bullet points of items to include in
the assignment. I use Precision to expand my thoughts into greater detail. For
quizzes, I use Precision to understand the questions and the answers
thoroughly. For multiple choice tests, I use Sequence to cross off answers that
I know are incorrect thus narrowing down the options.
Because of
my Learning Patterns, the greatest challenge I will face regarding online
learning will be time-management and beginning challenging assignments. I will
intensify my Precision to stay organized. I will intensify my Confluence by
brainstorming innovative ways to focus on and have fun learning the material.
Confluence will also boost my confidence in beginning new, unfamiliar
assignments. Since I use Sequence first, I will sometimes get stuck on an
assignment or question. If I stay ahead in the assignments, then I will have
ample time to reach out for guidance and help.
EXP 105
has taught me many skills that will be helpful in my job. I have a deeper
understanding of how these patterns extend into my everyday life and how to
strengthen those areas as well. My awareness of how others use their Learning
Patterns and different learning styles is beneficial to my personal and professional
relationships. I am aware of ways that Learning Patterns can cause conflict
between people, why people may have trouble communicating, and how they can
improve communication. In my professional life, it helps me have a little more
understanding when I am explaining a new process; I relay information taking
each person's learning dynamics into consideration. By learning the patterns
and how to strengthen them, it has made me a better listener and communicator.
Being taught how to learn with intention has improved my reading, writing and
other communication skills. I am more concise and precise because too many
details can impact the delivery and reception of my message.
Over the
last five weeks, I have enjoyed learning about Learning Patterns and how to
become a more intentional reader and writer. The class has increased my
confidence and lowered my doubts about starting school again. I am
well-prepared for future classes because I understand that I am in control of
and responsible for my learning. I know how to FIT my patterns and create
productive learning habits to encourage success. EXP 105 has been challenging
and informative; I would not change anything. All of the assignments, tests,
and lessons helped me become an intentional learner. EXP 105 taught me a lot of interesting,
applicable information which exceeded my expectations. I learned that my original idea of learning
was not going to work in the online environment. Now I feel like a student who
is ready for any academic challenge.
